Thrust Test Rig

Design

I designed a custom test rig in Fusion 360 using measurements taken with a digital caliper. The rig used an existing digital scale to measure the thrust produced by my motor and propeller setup while keeping costs low.

Build

Using spare filament, I 3D printed the test rig in two halves so the parts could fit onto the scale and be easily removed when the scale was needed elsewhere. Once positioned on the scale, the halves were secured together with tape to form the complete assembly. The electronic components were connected and temporarily mounted to the rig using tape for the same reason. Finally, I drilled four mounting holes in the top of the rig to securely attach the motor for thrust testing.

Iteration

During testing, I noticed that the rig had some unwanted play that could cause it to contact the scale and affect the accuracy of the measurements. To prevent this, I designed and installed a small 1/16-inch plate that acted as a spacer, ensuring the rig remained properly aligned and did not interfere with the test results.

Final Testing
Design

I used the area center of the Mickey head shape to determine its center point and accurately align the shapes in both orientations to form a circular design. The design was then converted into a stencil and painted onto the table after the base colors were applied.
